I would like to begin this article by saying that this is just an idea and not something I am wildly advocating for or anything. So if you’re stuck in your ways don’t come trying to kill me…

During a football game, a field goal usually represents frustration for the team. Yeah, they may have driven down the field but it’s kicked because the team was stopped from scoring a touchdown. The only nuance is to attempt to win a game or something of that nature.
My idea is to take the field goal and make it worth more. This would be by using the goal post and making them count for more than three.
Basically, a team would have to declare the goal of a kick is to hit the post. A kick that goes off the post counts for five points and if it deflects off the post and goal through it’s worth six. A regular kick straight-through would be the usual three points.
The NFL could also decide if certain distances for the kick could count for more or less. That would be another interesting part of kicking and trying to go for a regular make or the post kick.
Now, you’re probably laughing but when your team is down five at the very end of the game maybe you’ll actually like the idea.

What would this change?
Well, a lot of strategy from the team. Think of these options:
-Just taking the three points.
-Declaring going for the sidebar and trying to hit and miss.
-In certain instances, trying to hit the bar and make it through for even more points.
-Thinking about the sidebar earlier in a game versus just taking the three.

Well, the “two-point conversion” was dumb until it became a part of the game in football and is a staple now. The three-pointer in basketball was stupid too. Why not try and add some more fun to the game as it evolves in the future?
Do I think this will ever happen? Probably not.
I harken back to 2007 in Baltimore. Phil Dawson’s 51-yard kick off the post that bounced back into play after hitting the stanchion created a rule that made kicks that bounce back still count. That tied the game and the Browns ended up winning in overtime against the Ravens.
This Sunday – Enjoy the Browns game against the Chargers! Let’s get a win…and uhhh score only touchdowns so we don’t have to worry about kicking at all.
