Sunday was a disgusting disaster and it had me swearing verbally, writing swear words in article titles and more frustration on various fronts. However, it’s always good to try and find the positives and while that is difficult to do – I will try.
Browns wide receiver Amari Cooper had seven receptions for 86 yards and two touchdowns in the loss. It included an amazing first play from scrimmage; a 24-yard touchdown catch down the left side.
This was great to see because the veteran star really struggled in the first two weeks. Against the Jaguars he had three catches for 11 yards. In the first week, only two catches for 16 yards versus Dallas. We all remember that drop which would’ve been a long touchdown against the Cowboys. Other receivers made sure to make crucial drops in this past game instead of Amari.
After this past game, I’ve tried to reinforce that it’s not entirely quarterback Deshaun Watson’s fault. Seeing these numbers from Cooper is proof of that in the sense that he’s targeting and connecting with the top target and making sure this connection works.
Of course, not a single pass catcher can win a game by himself. That clearly showed in this past loss. However, if others start to step up having Cooper at his best could really be special and make this a better season for all.
Last year, Cooper caught 72 passes for a whopping 1,250 yards and five touchdowns. Now, it looks like he can get back on that pace moving forward this season. After all, the man has been a star for over a decade in this league.
So what now?
Well, moving forward the Browns can appreciate the play this past week from Cooper with the mindset that his excellence is not the only way for success as a team. Others must step up and most importantly not drop passes right in the numbers late in crucial games as we experienced Sunday.
Next week, the Browns take on the Las Vegas Raiders in a road affair. Look for this continuous connection between Watson and Cooper as a key to success for the team as a whole while not totally relying on it too. This past disappointing Giants loss will be a hard one to totally forget, but the Browns have to be better come Sunday on all fronts.
Keep it up, Amari Cooper!
