The Deshaun Watson news never seems to stop. Not during the regular season, not during the playoffs we don’t play in and not during the offseason. Just today, GM Andrew Berry announced the following via BR:
Per NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, Browns general manager Andrew Berry announced on Monday that Watson suffered a setback in his recovery from Achilles surgery. While Berry said it’s not yet clear how this will impact Watson’s recovery timeline, he also didn’t rule out the possibility of additional surgery for the signal-caller.
This is some huge reporting that changes the future of the Browns for a number of reasons. It’s not just your average, “Oh no we wish you the best, get well soon” deal that a typical fan base would have if their starting quarterback suffered a setback.
You know that song “Reasons” by Earth Wind & Fire? Well, this gives the Browns…wait for it…REASONS… to change direction with this franchise in regards to the quarterback position moving forward. It might begin with an offseason signing of a veteran and/or with the just-solidified number two selection with this upcoming draft.
Frankly, Deshaun Watson may never play another snap with the Cleveland Browns and that is wild to think about after just looking back at how great of a signing this was supposed to be overall for this franchise. Potentially, now one of the worst in the history of the NFL or sports in general.
Now, is this for certain? Well, of course not. It’s not as if Watson himself announced his retirement today and is officially done playing football forever. It’s a future that remains to be determined.
Even so, citing that “reasons” remark is now the fact that the Browns can look to improve the quarterback room for the next year and the future to come without this Watson burden. Let’s be honest, quarterbacks Bailey Zappe and Dorian Thompson-Robinson (DTR) proved absolutely nothing in limited time and also, Jameis Winston threw a crazy amount of interceptions as a backup and then got benched. Not like he’s a starter…
So, now what? Is it time for fans to hold celebration parties or what?
-First, the Browns better select a quarterback with the second pick overall in this upcoming draft.
-Next, sign a solid free-agent veteran quarterback such as Kirk Cousins, Justin Fields or Jacoby Brissett.
-Also, simply wouldn’t mind keeping Jameis Winson to be that third-string hype-up guy. Kind of like Tristan Thompson is on this current Cleveland Cavaliers team.
This team is going to have to assess just how bad the injury is to Watson and if it’s “over” officially or just more of a wait and we’ll give you a shot again to be the quarterback.

Deshaun, you never fail to make the headlines, whether it be through getting into trouble, posting videos of your own, getting injured, and, of course, sucking at the quarterback position.
Everyone, let’s try and enjoy this offseason as best you can. Hope you win some of your Super Bowl squares first.
