Welcome Back, Browns Nation! It’s exciting to say that Browns football is back!
The Browns played their first preseason game yesterday in Cleveland against the Green Bay Packers. Unfortunately, the Browns fell short, losing to the Packers 23-10.
While preseason games don’t count toward the regular season, there are still important takeaways from every game.
Star QBs Get Reps
Across the NFL’s Week 1 preseason games, many star quarterbacks took a few snaps or a drive to shake off some rust. This group included big names like Josh Allen, Patrick Mahomes, Joe Burrow, Trevor Lawrence, and the Packers’ Jordan Love. Love led one drive for the Packers, capping it off with a 65-yard touchdown pass to Dontayvion Wicks.
As for the Browns, fans eager to see DeShaun Watson in action will have to wait another week. It remains to be seen whether Kevin Stefanski will decide to give him some reps soon.
Second-Year QB Continues to Shine
On a brighter note, second-year QB Dorian Thompson-Robinson (DTR) saw extended playing time in the second half and the excitement around him keeps growing! DTR took control of the offense in the late third and fourth quarters, leading a touchdown drive and moving the team to the red zone on back-to-back possessions. He finished the game completing 14 of 18 passes for 134 yards.
There’s plenty to be excited about with DTR’s performance.
Offensive Line Concerns
Promising offensive lineman Luke Wypler suffered a broken ankle, which is a big blow to the Browns’ depth on the offensive line. The line struggled throughout the game and with the loss of star offensive line coach Bill Callahan, this is an area that needs monitoring. Evaluating the depth at this position and possibly bringing in more players will be crucial.
Rookie WR Breakout
Cleveland Browns rookie wide receiver Jamari Thrash, from the University of Louisville, delivered an impressive performance. He led the team in both receptions and receiving yards, showcasing his ability to make some great catches. With an average of 14.3 yards per reception, Thrash made a strong case for himself. While securing a roster spot might be challenging, continued standout performances like this could give him a real shot
Overall, it was a strong effort from the Browns, with even more motivation coming from Jameis Winston’s incredible pregame speech! The road to the Super Bowl is long, but here’s to a new season and another chance to make this the year we call the Browns the Super Brownies! Go Browns!
