The Cleveland Browns have made it official. LSU’s Cade York, the team’s fourth-round pick last weekend, will be the starting kicker in 2022.
Cleveland picked York on Saturday, and on Monday, they released last year’s starter Chase McLaughlin and another kicker, Chris Blewitt, to clear the path for the All-SEC kicker.
Today, Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski announced that the team isn’t bringing in any competition for York over the summer either. The kicking job belongs to him.
Browns fans have seen their team struggle in the kicking game recently, so they’re certainly hoping the decision to go all-in on York pays off.
York, who was a second-team All-American in 2020, converted 164-for-168 extra points and 56-of-66 field goals during his career at LSU.
He won’t have to do much to be better than McLaughlin was in 2021. Last season, McLaughlin made just 71.4% of his field goal attempts and the Browns converted only 72.7% of their field goal tries as a team.
