Cleveland keeps one of their two special team corners.
Is it deja vu? On Thursday, the Cleveland Browns announced that they have re-signed Tony Brown, a cornerback who is viewed as a key special teams contributor.
Why does it seem like history repeating itself? Last year in free agency, the Browns signed Brown, re-uniting him with special teams coordinator Bubba Ventrone. It was a move that meant the team was moving on from CB Mike Ford, one of their previous special teams aces.
Ford ended up signing with the Houston Texans in free agency last year, but didn’t make their final roster. Cleveland signed him back, and he was on the roster for the majority of the 2024 season. A few days ago, though, the Atlanta Falcons signed Ford to a two-year deal, which gives them a nice tandem of former Browns special teamers (the other being WR KhaDarel Hodge).
Last year, Ford had 8 special teams tackles for the Browns, while Brown had 3 special teams tackles and a forced fumble. Brown was not utilized on defense, and it’s not expected that he would be in 2025 either.
