Nick Chubb suffered a gruesome knee injury that ended his season in September and required two surgeries. As he continues to work toward a comeback, he discussed the mental drain associated with his major health setback.
Speaking to reporters Wednesday, Chubb credited his teammates for lifting his spirits during a trying recovery.
“I was down mentally for a while,” Chubb said, courtesy of The Plain Dealer‘s Mary Kay Cabot. “When you get hurt, it’s one thing. When you get hurt again and you already know what you have to go through, the entire process, surgery, rehab, it’s a non-stop battle every day. So my team did a great job of being there for me, and I was around the building for them. They did a great job, made the playoffs, had a great run.”
Chubb underwent surgery to repair the meniscus and MCL in his left knee in September. Two months, later, the star running back had another procedure on his ACL.
Taking the field this week “felt good” for Cubb, but the 28-year-old wouldn’t provide a timetable for his expected return.
“I’m not looking too far ahead,” Chubb said, via ESPN’s Daniel Oyefusi. “I’m just taking it day by day.”
Rejoining his teammates motivated Chubb, who expressed gratitude to the Browns for sticking with him through a difficult ordeal.
“It’s a blessing to play this game,” he said, per NFL.com’s Eric Edholm. “You can’t take it for granted because in one play, it can all be taken away. I’m just blessed to have so much support around Cleveland, the fans, my friends, family, just to keep me uplifted and keep me going.”
