Well, it was Saturday afternoon when we all heard the unfortunate and devastating news that legendary Cleveland Browns broadcaster Jim Donovan had passed away. We had known that he was suffering from cancer and it sadly became an official demise.
After the news, I think your average team would be hungry to capitalize and win the upcoming matchup to honor the man who just passed. However, these Browns were coming in with a 1-6 record against a very talented 5-2 Ravens squad and The Dawgs had troubles aplenty.
I know I wasn’t racing myself to bank on any type of sign with the way this team was playing for the season. I thought for sure the Browns and everyone surrounding them would honor Jim Donovan before the game. Yes, they did and it was wonderful to see, watch and read about.
Amazingly, the Browns won the game in Cleveland by a score of 29-24 in dramatic fashion. It was a toe-to-toe matchup between AFC North Rivals. Man, that Lamar Jackson is great. Our new quarterback Jameis Winston threw three touchdowns and had 334 yards passing himself, an incredible performance.
Certainly, many mistakes were made by the Brown and Orange. Yet just enough was done in order to secure the victory with defense on the final play. The Browns are now 2-5 and while that’s not something to brag about, it’s a lot better than 1-6.
Looking down, I’d like to think Jim Donovan was watching with a smile. If he’s doing the broadcast up in heaven, I’m sure his call of that final play was absolutely incredible.
Jim, you were an inspiration for me growing up into the young man that I am today. To hear your voice and see your enthusiasm for your craft and this team that you loved was a treasure I will cherish forever.
Today’s Browns win had to be some type of divine intervention. The Ravens were supposed to destroy Cleveland. A team that has been horrific throughout this entire season. A team in turmoil from the coaching staff to the quarterbacks and beyond.
Yet the Browns won.
It wasn’t easy and it wasn’t pretty by any means but the Browns got the win and they did it just after our legend was laid to rest.
I know I will be going to sleep tonight imagining that call Jim would’ve made for us all. Thinking about the excitement and happiness of a man who will never be forgotten.
I have a few select Cleveland sports memories that are symbolic to me for a number of reasons. Moments that are special and that I love to remember. This game and its finish is now certainly one of those.
Go Browns. Rest in Peace, Jim. This one was certainly for you my friend.
