I never thought it was possible to get that pumped up for a preseason football game. It’s exciting the season is starting and football is being played. However, we all know these games don’t count and we are simply praying that no one gets hurt as the Browns prepare for the regular season.
Well, the Dawgs ended up losing to the Packers by a score of 23-10 in Cleveland. But it wasn’t the game itself that had me so…enthralled.
Before the game, there was a recording of the backup quarterback Jameis Winston giving a pump-up speech where he preached about being “obsessed with your opportunity.” And it’s true, after all a lot of those players have the chance to try and make an NFL team and that is quite an opportunity.
This is the video:
Now, this isn’t a quarterback competition or anything as DeShaun Watson is going to be the starter of the Browns. Even so, his leadership is certainly within question.
Winston is 30 years old and played five years with the Bucs and four years with the Saints before joining the Browns this year. He was actually the first pick by those Bucs in 2015.
It’s simply that leadership that showed by said backup with a pump-up cry that proves just what this veteran brings to a team that could use the leadership, especially at such a vital position in quarterback.
Watson hasn’t been able to live up to the five-year 230 million guaranteed contract. He’s heading into the third season of that and has struggled with shoulder issues, drama with women and simply doubt from fans alike. Of course, the best-case scenario is that Watson finally lives up to the expectations and Winston is able to provide that leadership in the backup role.
In the game itself, Watson did not play and Winston went 4/5 for 30 yards.
Why do I feel like we will be seeing Jameis Winston as the starter at some point and this not working out so great just like in years past with Watson? Wait, be positive, Zach! One thing is certain and that is I was obsessed with my opportunity to drink Diet Coke and Coffee during the game!
A lot of this is simply wait and see…
The players seemed to rally behind Winston via that short video. Let’s hope that won’t be the last time he’s able to fire up the team. Maybe Winston will provide Watson with some leadership tips that he can use being the starter and such…
