Taking a look at why the Browns were so adamant about bringing Mike Bloomgren to Cleveland
One of the most important coaching hires of the Cleveland Browns’ offseason has already happened, and that’s Mike Bloomgren at Offensive Line Coach.
Though Offensive Coordinator is obviously the more exciting hire, Bloomgren will most likely be the guy who’s tasked with fixing both the offensive line and run game regardless of who the team finds to be their OC in the coming weeks.
There were a few main reasons why the Browns seemingly jumped on Mike Bloomgren so quickly following Andy Dickerson’s dismissal:
Familiarity with Bill Callahan
One of his most sought-after qualities was the fact that he’s a Bill Callahan disciple, and not just a disciple either, he was Callahan’s “right-hand man” with the New York Jets from 2008-2010. Callahan ensured that Bloomgren was kept on staff during a regime change in NY when the team transitioned to the Rex Ryan era.
The Browns wanted to find someone who was familiar with Coach Callahan and his coaching style so why not hire one of his top pupils? On the surface, it’s an A++ hire.
Scheme Diversity
Bloomgren’s next most attractive trait was likely his scheme diversity when it comes to the run game.
While at Stanford, when he both designed and implemented one of the top rushing offenses in college football, he was successful and innovative with both power and zone scheme variations.
For example, he would run wide zone/outside zone with an insert blocker that was incredibly effective.
Cleveland’s ground game was very bland in 2024, and someone like Bloomgren is exactly the type of coach who can fix it.
Offensive Line coaching history
Though he’s had a few different titles at both the collegiate and pro level, he’s essentially been an offensive line coach for 20+ years and was a tight end during his playing days at Culver-Stockton College.
He’s well versed in all things blocking and it’s pretty safe to say that’s where he’s needed most when it comes to the Browns’ offense.
