Cleveland Browns rookie defensive tackle Mike Hall Jr. was issued a five-game suspension from the NFL on Tuesday, Oct. 1. Hall violated the league’s personal conduct policy and has yet to see the field this regular season.
Hall pleaded no contest after he was arrested for a domestic altercation with his fiancé on Aug. 13. The first-degree misdemeanor would later put him on the Commissioner’s Exempt list, making him ineligible to practice or attend games. He allegedly placed a gun to her temple prior to the police arriving and seizing two handguns from the residence. Hall’s fiancé dropped a protection order last week before the suspension was announced. He was given a 30-day suspended jail sentence and only had to pay a $250 fine after posting the $10,000 bail.
The 21-year-old second-round pick out of Ohio State remained on the list until the announcement of his suspension. Hall missed the first four games of the season while waiting for the result of the investigation. The personal conduct policy does allow for regular season games to count towards any later suspension that is imposed. Hall will however have to return any salary from those games. This means that Hall will only have to sit out the next game against the Washington Commanders before being eligible to return on Oct. 7.
Cleveland’s defensive line does have solid depth even without Hall, but adding him in will certainly help the rotation. He was impressive at Ohio State and was a highly-rated prospect in this year’s draft. Hall played in all three preseason games, totaling two tackles and two quarterback hits in his limited time. The defensive line has struggled against the run at times this season and will welcome Hall’s contribution on the field with his return. Fans can only hope his off-field issues stop here.
