Kirk Cousins rumors continue for the Browns but two other QBs
The Cleveland Browns are the center of much of the rumor mill in the NFL, not just here at DBN. With DE Myles Garrett holding fast to his desire to be traded, not extended (we talked about that on Day 1 of the NFL combine), the Browns having the second overall pick and the need for a starting level quarterback, Cleveland is close to the center of the NFL offseason world.
Quarterback will always be the big story with it seeming like Kirk Cousins is certainly on the way, despite the Atlanta Falcons saying they are happy with him as their backup and will pay the $10 million bonus.
According to an Insider piece on ESPN (subscriber, $), the Browns are locked into drafting a quarterback with the second pick in this year’s NFL draft:
The overwhelming belief of the people I spoke to this week is that the Browns plan to stay put at No. 2 in the draft and take one of the top quarterbacks. Their preference between Cam Ward and Shedeur Sanders is unclear, but if one goes at No. 1, I believe they’d be OK with taking the other.
On top of that piece of news, Jeremy Fowler noted three veteran names that Cleveland will consider on the free agent market:
- Kirk Cousins – Folwer notes that there is a chance the Falcons don’t cut him
- Daniel Jones
- Carson Wentz
Jones spent a couple of months with the Minnesota Vikings this last season after getting cut by the New York Giants. Wentz spent last season with the Kansas City Chiefs, playing in three games, and has been on five different teams in the last five seasons.
Could a few months with Kevin O’Connell have fixed Jones? What about a whole year with Andy Reid and Patrick Mahomes, after spending a season with Sean McVay and Matthew Stafford in 2023, for Wentz?
Overall, of the options, drafting the first quarterback off the board this year and signing Cousins seems like the best option for the Browns based on the above projections. With NFL free agency around the corner, rumors could start to heat up even more.
Of the rumored options above, which pairing do you like the best between a veteran and a rookie?
