Cleveland has reportedly told Dalvin Tomlinson they will release him at the start of the new league year.
The Cleveland Browns are planning to release veteran defensive tackle Dalvin Tomlinson at the start of the new league year on Wednesday.
Tomlinson will be designated as a post-June 1 cut – joining safety Juan Thornhilll in that category – and can sign with a new team after 4 p.m. on Wednesday.
That is according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
Cleveland originally signed Tomlinson as a free agent in 2023 to a four-year contract worth $57 million, with $25 million guaranteed.
In his two seasons with the Browns, Tomlinson played in 32 games, all starts, and was a veteran presence on the interior defensive line, posting 54 tackles, 10 tackles for loss, 30 quarterback hits, and six sacks.
Tomlinson was originally going to bring a cap hit of just a bit over $11.4 million this season. But by designating him as a post-June 1 release, the cap hit will be a little more than $5 million, according to Over the Cap. The Browns will also take on dead cap charges of $5.04 million in 2026 and 2027, and then a $2 million dead cap hit in 2028.
The move leaves the Browns a bit thin at defensive tackle with Maurice Hurst scheduled to be a free agent, and the rest of the current position group including Jowon Briggs, Michael Dwumfour, Mike Hall Jr., Shelby Harris, and former CFL player Ralph Holley.
Tomlinson was recently highlighted by Dawg By Nature’s Chris Pokorny as a potential cap casualty as general manager Andrew Berry continues to work to bring the Browns into compliance with the league’s salary cap.
