Jameis Winston’s time with the New Orleans Saints is apparently over.
According to NFL insider Jordan Schultz, the Cleveland Browns are signing Winston to a one-year deal worth up to $8.7 million.
“Winston fielded interest from multiple teams and decided this morning that he’s going to Cleveland,” Schultz said.
It was reported that Winston received interest from the Tennessee Titans and New York Giants. The Denver Broncos were also mentioned as a potential suitor, which made sense due to Sean Payton’s connection with him.
Winston, a former No. 1 overall pick, spent four seasons with the Saints. He completed 59.9 percent of his pass attempts for 2,367 yards with 20 touchdowns and 11 interceptions.
Unfortunately for Winston, injuries derailed his run in New Orleans. After suffering a torn ACL in 2021, he suffered a serious back injury in 2022. He was then replaced by Derek Carr.
Winston won’t be the starting quarterback in Cleveland, but if Deshaun Watson misses time for any reason, he could revitalize his career the way Joe Flacco did this past season.
As for the Saints, they must now find a new backup quarterback. Perhaps they’ll put their faith in former fourth-round pick Jake Haener. That’s unclear at the moment though.
