The latest Cleveland Browns news and notes from around the NFL in the Saturday Dawg Chow.
Happy Saturday, Browns fans!
It is a stress-free weekend as the Browns bask in their latest victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers. Thursday night’s snowfest ran Cleveland’s record to 5-1-1 in their last seven home games against the Steelers, which is at least something in an otherwise dreary season.
Cleveland defensive end Myles Garrett had a big night with three sacks, three tackles for a loss, and a forced fumble as he reminded a national TV audience why he is the game’s best defensive player.
Now everyone gets to sit back and relax for a few days before going back to work in December with consecutive road games against the Denver Broncos and then the rematch with the Steelers.
Let’s kick off the day with the latest edition of the Saturday Dawg Chow.
Dawgs By Nature:
- Browns flexed out of upcoming primetime game (Jared Mueller) – The NFL made the decision on Friday to flex the Week 16 game between the Cleveland Browns and Cincinnati Bengals out of its primetime slot.
- Browns vs. Steelers: Grades from the AFC North win on a magical night (Damon Wolfe) – It was a magnificent night in Cleveland and will be remembered for years. Now let’s dish out some grades for the night.
- The Jerry Jeudy trade continues to pay off for the Browns (Matt Wilson) – The Cleveland Browns defeated the Pittsburgh Steelers in a nail-biting thriller on Thursday night and two things remained incredibly consistent throughout the game: The snow and Jerry Jeudy.
Cleveland Browns:
- Browns should re-sign Nick Chubb, a hero in first game vs. Steelers since injury (Beacon Journal) – Full-circle moments can cause reflection, and one of those instances occurred when Cleveland Browns running back Nick Chubb encountered the Pittsburgh Steelers in a snow globe on “Thursday Night Football.”
- ‘That’s what I think of when I think of AFC North football:’ Snow makes Browns’ win over Steelers instant classic (cleveland.com) – It was like stepping onto a movie set. As lake effect snow belted down on Cleveland Thursday night, those in attendance for the Browns’ 24-19 win over the rival Pittsburgh Steelers were treated to some quintessential AFC North football.
- Browns win this beautiful battle but are way behind in the war (Browns Zone) – The Cleveland Browns and their two wins returned home Thursday night to face the Pittsburgh Steelers and their eight wins. The eternal, unanswered question — still, after all these gruesome, empty years — is how could two NFL franchises be so close geographically and so distant artistically?
- Jack Conklin holds off T.J. Watt in Browns’ win over Steelers (clevelandbrowns.com) – Facing Pittsburgh’s T.J. Watt for a majority of snaps on Thursday night was Jack Conklin, whose performance kept Jameis Winston upright and with ample time to throw the ball.
NFL:
- NY Giants release QB Daniel Jones after six seasons and final benching (northjersey.com) – Daniel Jones is no longer a New York Giant. The quarterback who was benched earlier this week requested his release from the team in the aftermath and on Friday morning that request was granted, ending a six-year relationship between Jones and the Giants.
- After strong start to season, Mike Tomlin deserves blame for Steelers’ frustrating loss to Browns (Pittsburgh Post-Gazette) – Here’s hoping Mike Tomlin didn’t spend too much time working on that NFL Coach of the Year speech. The feel-good vibes that have surrounded the Steelers’ season — all of those correct buttons pushed and sticky situations navigated — backfired on Tomlin on Thursday night during what has become an all-too-common theme of his tenure.
- What’s wrong with Kyle Shanahan’s offense in San Francisco? (The Ringer) – The advanced stats may say the San Francisco 49ers’ offense is fine. But the eye test and the team’s 5-5 record tell us something else. What’s really going on?
- Trial for Patriots safety Jabrill Peppers set for January (ESPN) – New England Patriots safety Jabrill Peppers, who in early October pleaded not guilty after being arrested on charges that include strangulation and drug possession, had a jury trial set for Jan. 22 on Friday.
