The latest Cleveland Browns news and notes from around the NFL in the Saturday Dawg Chow.
The NFL world was focused this past week on New Orleans as the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles prepare for Sunday’s Super Bowl.
The league’s marquee event took a back seat in Cleveland, however, after defensive end Myles Garrett went public with his desire for a trade.
That set a flurry of activity over whether or not the Browns should acquiesce to Garrett’s wishes or simply ignore them, what they could potentially receive in a trade for the league’s best defensive player, and how this is the latest kick in an unpleasant place for fans of the team.
It was all just the latest reminder that the Browns, even though they have not played a game in five weeks, still dominate the headlines in this town, even if it sadly is not always for the right reasons.
For now, there has been no movement from either side that indicates they are having a change of heart, so while we wait for the next news nugget to drop let’s kick off the weekend with the latest edition of the Saturday Dawg Chow.
Dawgs By Nature:
- Josh Allen joins Lamar Jackson, Patrick Mahomes as ‘MVP QBs CLE passed on’ but that is outcome bias thinking (Jared Mueller) – Many around the Cleveland Browns (fans and media) noticed that quarterbacks Josh Allen, Lamar Jackson and Patrick Mahomes have all won MVP awards and could have been wearing the orange and brown uniform.
- NFL Draft analyst compares Shedeur Sanders to an elite AFC QB, could Browns agree? (Jared Mueller) – With a lot of great quarterbacks in the AFC, including three recent MVPs, the Cleveland Browns hope to find someone who can help them compete in the AFC North with Joe Burrow and Lamar Jackson. To the surprise of some, Burrow was the comparison for Shedeur Sanders from CBS Sports NFL draft analyst Emory Hunt.
- NFL Free Agency Profile: LB Kyzir White, Cardinals (Matt Wilson) – One of the most intriguing prospects for the Cleveland Browns in free agency based on their run-stopping prowess and athleticism is Kyzir White, who’s been a key contributor for the Arizona Cardinals over the past two seasons.
- NFL Honors recap: Browns come up empty, but Myles Garrett, Nick Chubb get recognition (Chris Pokorny) – See how things shook out during the annual NFL Honors program.
Cleveland Browns:
- Five-time All-American, Cleveland Browns legend Eric Metcalf talks living his dreams in NFL (wjbf.com) – Former NFL player Eric Metcalf is a five-time All American and has been deemed a Cleveland Brown Legend. Metcalf chats with WJBF about his illustrious career and what it means to “live your dreams.”
- 2017 NFL re-draft: Where would Myles Garrett, Deshaun Watson, Patrick Mahomes go today? (Beacon Journal) – If they could do it over again, would the Cleveland Browns still select Myles Garrett as the top choice of the 2017 NFL Draft? Where would Deshaun Watson — off-field accusations, injury history and all — fall if all teams got a mulligan?
- What do most Browns fans think of Myles Garrett’s trade request? (Terry Pluto) – I’m trying to recall the last time a star such as Myles Garrett asked to be traded with two years left on his contract – and nearly all the fans are supporting him.
- Browns probably won’t trade Myles Garrett because they are the Browns (Browns Zone) – Do you ever get the feeling that the Browns are their own worst enemy? I’ll bet they do. I mean, how could they not? Every time they try to improve their team they diminish it.
NFL:
- Unlikely Super Bowl stars: Catching up with former players, coaches (ESPN) – The Super Bowl is one of the biggest athletic stages in the world. All-Pro selections and steady contributors are expected to make an impact, but every so often a player comes out of nowhere and rises to the occasion — even if it is their only great NFL performance.
- Howard Twilley, an original Dolphin who had a Super Bowl TD to cap 17-0 season, dies at 81 (Miami Herald) – Howard Twilley, who played for the Miami Dolphins in their first season of existence and caught the only touchdown pass in the Super Bowl win that completed the only undefeated season in NFL history, died on Wednesday at 81.
- Are all dynasties destined to become villains? The Chiefs are finding out (The Ringer) – Dynasties aren’t born hated; the villainy grows. Do the Kansas City Chiefs really deserve it, or have football fans simply grown bored by Kansas City’s inevitability?
