Culture influences everything, from music to sports. The culture in our nation is changing rapidly, as we go from one thing to the next at warp speed. But what about the culture surrounding the Cleveland Browns? The aura surrounding the team has stagnated despite rapid national changes.
A losing record over the last 26 seasons suggests a culture conditioned to defeat. With only about 5.5 wins per year on average per season in that span, one might agree.
Here’s what the Browns have to do to gain a winning culture:
Leadership: Lack of fundamentals has destroyed this team at times; penalties, especially pre-snap penalties, poor execution, and lack of discipline plague each Browns’ squad (offense, defense, special teams), season after season. Those things must stop.
One player the Cleveland Browns could consider to help improve team culture in free agency is Kirk Cousins. Cousins was known for his professionalism, work ethic and leadership qualities. He has been a captain for much of his career, showcasing his ability to lead by example and rally teams. While Cousins isn’t officially a free agent as of early 2025, there’s speculation around his contract situation with the Atlanta Falcons.
Here are some notable NFL free agents from various positions who could potentially impact team culture or performance:
Quarterback:
- Sam Darnold – If not re-signed by the Vikings, Darnold has shown flashes of capability and could be a solid bridge or starter for a team looking for quarterback stability.
Running Back:
- Aaron Jones – Known for his leadership and consistency, Jones could help instill a winning culture with his work ethic and professionalism.
Wide Receiver:
- Tee Higgins – A dynamic player who could change the dynamic of an offense, bringing not only skill but also a competitive spirit.
Offensive Linemen:
- Trey Smith – His youthful energy combined with his performance could solidify an offensive line while contributing positively to the team’s culture.
Defensive Linemen:
- Chase Young – Despite injury concerns, his potential and past performance make him a high-impact player. His drive to succeed could be infectious.
Linebacker:
- Nick Bolton – A young, dedicated linebacker from the Chiefs, known for his leadership and football IQ, which could translate well into any team’s culture.
Cornerback:
- Charvarius Ward – His experience in big games and consistent performance could elevate the secondary and bring a championship mentality.
Safety:
- Jevon Holland – Known for his hard-hitting style and versatility, Holland could be a cultural cornerstone for a defense looking for a leader.
Players come and go, but the Browns’ doleful culture remains. The transformation must go beyond new players; ownership should prioritize those throughout the organization who positively affect the team’s ethos. “Times they are changing!” Let’s hope the Browns can get back to being a winning team and develop a “Jim Brown” culture.
