What quarterback throws for 497 yards in a game and…loses?
Yeah, our quarterback in Jameis Winston did. The Cleveland Browns fell to the Denver Broncos in the Mile High City on Monday Night by a score of 41-32. Winston went 34/58 for said 497 yards, four touchdowns and *three* interceptions in the tough loss making the team 3-9 overall. He passed former Browns quarterback Josh McCown for 457 yards in a single game for the record in Cleveland (33-30 win over Baltimore in 2015).
I tried to think of the most creative way to describe watching this quarterback and this is what I could come up with and I think it’s accurate.
The most enjoyable part about Jameis is that he is simply a great guy. From his motivational speeches to his faith in the lord and the way he treats his teammates is amazing. But what is the oldest saying in the books? “Nice guys finish last.”
Winston is clearly liked a lot more than past starter Deshaun Watson who not only had a plethora of legal issues but also injuries that have kept him out for the season. Plus, the mass amount of money the man is making is the most frustrating part of that contract situation.
Unfortunately, what’s the biggest problem with Jameis?
Every time he slings it back there’s a chance. A chance that he’s going to sling that ball and an opposing defender may not only pick it off but also return it back for a touchdown.
Part of every great quarterback is not just throwing for the yardage but preventing those interceptions that turn to the tables. Winston’s game was a great one yet because of those three interceptions it cost the Browns the contest.
The Browns have five games remaining now and were officially eliminated from the playoffs after the loss last night. (Right, we were all buying our playoff seats). It will be very interesting to see how Winston plays in those games and what the rest of the season looks like.
Winston was only signed for a single season and that is a decision that is going to have to be made this coming off-season. A lot of people wonder if Winston was the starter from the beginning where these Browns would be at this stage.
The Browns have made it a point to be clear that Deshaun Watson is the guy in the coming years. That remains to be seen based on his recovery, his offseason behavior and more.
On the flip side, would Winston even be willing to come back to Cleveland as a backup to Watson? Would another team after seeing these performances so far want to sign him as the starter?
What a fun offseason ahead.
I enjoy Jameis…
Every time the man stands in for a press interview, pumps up his teammates or even has success as the Browns quarterback (most of the time).
The Browns have a lot of decisions to eventually make and this offseason is going to be filled with many ups and downs for sure.
