In a twisted kind of way, Baker Mayfield could be with the Cleveland Browns for the 2022 season. No, seriously.
It’s a theory that’s currently being thrown around by ProFootballTalk’s Mike Florio.
The Browns are standing pat with Mayfield as they haven’t gotten a trade proposal that they’ve liked yet. There also haven’t been a lot of teams that have been aggressive in trading for Mayfield.
Mayfield has a fully guaranteed salary of $18.8 million, which also could be scaring some teams.
Cleveland could decide to keep him in the fray because there’s a good chance Deshaun Watson is going to be suspended for a good chunk of the 2022 season.
Mayfield would then get a chance to start again (if he decides to report to the team).
He’s coming off an injury-riddled 2021 campaign that saw all of his numbers drop considerably. He finished with 3,010 yards through the air, 17 touchdowns, and 13 interceptions.
There could be many more twists and turns in this saga before a solution is reached.
