One game.
I always think about that “Miracle” movie where Coach Brooks gives that speech about how important the game is for them. While this may not exactly be the case for the Browns, it does hold some significance here at four against the Cowboys in Cleveland. First game of the season, after all!
In the first three preseason games, Deshaun Watson didn’t play at all due to shoulder soreness. And I get that, it’s better to be safe than sorry in games that don’t count.
However, here in week one, everyone will be watching and ready to either praise or criticize hard-core.
Watson’s contract has been dubbed as one of the worst ever in the history of football and rightfully so. He does have a chance to prove otherwise this upcoming season with success starting here in Cleveland today.
Now, does a win or a loss dictate the entire season? Of course not. Even so, it’ll dub the narrative for the entire season moving forward certainly.
Also, let’s say the Browns lose and Watson plays well. Fans will at least give him some credit. The opposite in the sense of the team winning and Watson struggling will make fans skeptical even with that 1-0 start.
Watson has a career 8-4 record as quarterback of the Browns. Injuries have plagued him and that’s another factor to watch today is how he looks throwing the ball with his shoulder. How does he take the hits?
In case it wasn’t already known, Watson’s contract is five years and 230 million dollars. It’ll last through 2028. The contract was just recently restructucted. Via Yahoo: “a contract restructure that will see $44.79 million of his salary cap space this season converted to a signing bonus, giving the team $35.83 million in new cap space, according to ESPN’s Field Yates.”
Look. It’s only one game and yeah it counts the same as most. Yet frankly, the way fans see this one versus most is going to be insane and the response will be a wild one hopefully on the positive side.
Yes, it’s a team sport, but certainly, the quarterback dictates a lot of the happenings for each squad. It’s about time Watson proved his worth here in Cleveland or else it’s going to be a miserable couple of years for this franchise.
This may sound dumb yet my biggest key is that Watson stays heathly and does so over the course of the entire season starting today!
Tom Brady will be calling this game. There’s an example of a great quarterback over the course of many years! Look to him for an example.
