The Cleveland Browns have announced that this team is restructuring the contract for quarterback Deshaun Watson. Initially, every fan started screaming after hearing the news around this holiday season. Here is all of the info via ESPN:
Watson has two years remaining on the five-year, fully guaranteed $230 million deal that he signed upon being traded to Cleveland before the 2022 season. The Browns owe Watson $46 million in each of the next two seasons, and he has a cap hit of $72.9 million in 2025 and 2026 — both the second-highest in the NFL. The reworked contract adds two void years to the deal, allowing the Browns to push out his dead salary cap into 2030, sources said. Watson’s contract contained two void years (2027-28) before the restructure. Now, it has four. He’s still under contract for the next two years and is set to be a free agent in 2027.

Many are suggesting that because of this restructuring, it now means that Watson is going to be staying for two more seasons in Cleveland for sure. That would be exactly what many fans were hoping *not* to see because of just how bad Watson has been these past few years. A lot were hoping for a free-agent quarterback to be signed and take the role of the starter in Cleveland in the coming year(s). Someone like Sam Darnold or Kirk Cousins…
The good news is the Browns will have a lot more cap room in the coming years because of this massive restructuring. Thus, potential signings/re-signings of others can be made. The bad news, in many people’s opinions, is Watson will be on the roster and potentially the starter for many years to come.
The best-case scenario is Watson comes back healthy while taking the pay cut and ends up playing well in the future as the starter. It’s unexpected for him to suck, sadly, due to the recent performance with his time thus far in Cleveland.
With a current 3-12 record with just two games left in the season, this year is hopeless and it would probably be best to tank and get a better draft pick. That’s why fans are so focused on the future because of how horrific this season has been for the team.
Deshaun, try to stay out of trouble and prove all of us fans wrong in the future. Honestly, saying that simply because we’re now stuck with you due to this decision made by the front office and ownership.
This is quite an exciting time to be a fan of the Browns, that’s for sure. Woo…
