With the Browns season soundly over, we need to begin the early look ahead into the draft. This year the draft is filled with great players, all of which would be a nice addition to the team. There are however, a few decisions the Browns could make that would be considered bad. I will list a few of those, a long with who you can realistically expect for the Browns.
Best Case Scenario
It’s pretty easy to guess that, it’s going to be Travis Hunter. He is probably the best player in the draft, and his duel-position skill set is very rare to see. While I don’t think he’ll be playing both sides of the ball in the NFL, having played both sides adds another reason to want Hunter. As of today (December 30, 2024), the Browns hold the third overall pick. The first goes to the Patriots, who does need defense and receiver more than they need DB. Assuming they don’t take Hunter, the Titans will be another road block. There are other options, but again they should pick him if he is there. If the Titans for some reason don’t select Hunter, the Browns should pick him with a under one second delay. Assuming he doesn’t get here, which sucks but isn’t the end of the world, this draft is very stacked in the top 15. Players like Abdul Carter out of Penn State would be wonderful, as he is a special talent you can’t pass up on. Mason Graham out of Michigan is another great defensive pick, who would be a great addition to the team. There are a million people you could pick, most of which would be good.
Worst Case Scenario
There isn’t exactly a “worst case”, but there are choices I am not very fond of. The first is selecting a QB here at the third pick. Why? Just why? Neither Sanders nor Ward are worth a top three pick, and especially not with how stacked the draft is in the top ten. While I do think both will be taken in the first round, I believe that is not because of talent, but because of how desperate teams are for the QB position. The two aren’t bad, not at all, but I don’t see them worth using a top three pick over. Will this come back to bite me three years down the line? Maybe, but that’s the NFL. Players in the NFL are hard to predict. I also don’t think trading down is the best idea, simply because of how stacked the top ten is. This is a very top heavy draft, and I think missing out on that is a bad idea. Again, I can’t predict everything. I only think that personally, it’s worth it to stay at three.
Regardless of what the Browns decide to do, whether I like it or not, this isn’t going to change as much as you think it might. Rookies can change things, but not too much. Realistically, the team is going to be just the same next year, except with some good talent. Things don’t change after a good draft, they change after a few good drafts and four years. Free agency is different, but that’s not what we are talking about here. The Browns draft will help the future, not today. We need to focus on the future, and not focus on 2026. No matter what happens, we need to try and stay positive the best we can. It’s tough, but we can do it. I promise.
