The Cleveland Browns’ 2024 NFL season hasn’t started as planned. Sitting at 1-5, the team has struggled to find its footing. Deshaun Watson, who was expected to elevate the team to playoff contention, has underperformed, plagued by inconsistent play. Adding to the woes is the absence of star running back Nick Chubb due to injury, and a porous offensive line that’s given Watson little protection. On the surface, the Browns’ season looks like a disappointment—but there’s a silver lining.
Draft Capital Brings Hope for the Future
While the 1-5 start is tough, Browns fans have something to look forward to: the NFL Draft. Cleveland holds its own first-round pick in 2024, which, based on current standings, could be in the top five or even higher. This is significant because the Browns haven’t owned a top pick in recent years, after having traded away picks in the Watson deal. Now, they have an opportunity to either draft a franchise-altering player or leverage their draft capital for a trade that can bring in more talent.
The team also holds a second-round pick, as well as two third-round picks, meaning they can add multiple impact players. With a deep draft class expected in 2024, Cleveland is positioned to address key needs, whether it be on the offensive line, at running back, or even potentially a quarterback should they decide to move on from Watson.
Deshaun Watson’s Struggles: Fixable?
Deshaun Watson has not lived up to his contract, which ranks among the highest in NFL history. He’s struggled under the Browns’ current offensive scheme, showing signs of poor decision-making and mechanical issues. Some of this can be attributed to bad coaching. Head coach Kevin Stefanski has faced increasing criticism for his inability to tailor the offense to Watson’s strengths, and a coaching change could revitalize Watson’s play. It’s not uncommon for quarterbacks to rebound under a new system and coach. Just look at players like Matthew Stafford or Geno Smith, who found success with better support.
Injuries and Line Struggles
The loss of Nick Chubb to a season-ending knee injury the year before was a major blow. Chubb, one of the best running backs in the league, provided balance to the Browns’ offense, taking pressure off Watson. Without Chubb, opposing defenses have been able to key in on the passing game, exposing the Browns’ offensive line problems. Fixing the line through the draft or free agency should be a priority, and doing so could drastically improve Watson’s effectiveness.
Looking Ahead
While this season may feel like a disaster, it’s really a reset for a brighter future. The Browns can continue to lose, secure a top draft pick, and potentially land the number one overall spot. Whether they choose to use that pick or trade down to acquire even more assets, Cleveland is well-positioned for a turnaround in 2025 and beyond.
A 1-5 record might be disheartening, but it could be the beginning of a new chapter. With key draft picks and a roster that still has potential, the Browns’ future is far from bleak.
