As Browns fans, we find ourselves asking many questions after the team’s disappointing 33-17 loss to the Dallas Cowboys. Unfortunately, there are no easy answers. This game, one of the worst in recent memory, leaves us with critical takeaways and uncertainties for the future.
Defensive Struggles Amid Offensive Collapse
While the defense allowed 33 points, it’s tough to place the blame squarely on their shoulders. The offense’s poor performance left the defense in difficult positions, with the Cowboys capitalizing on two long touchdown drives. Outside of those drives, Dallas was often set up with excellent field position due to the Browns’ offensive miscues. The defense, still considered one of the league’s best, was placed in an impossible situation. Had the Browns secured a victory, the conversation might have centered on Dak Prescott’s struggles and whether he’s being carried by the rest of the team. Instead, following Deshaun Watson’s worst game to date, the narrative has shifted entirely.
Bright Spot: Jerome Ford
One positive to note is the play of Jerome Ford, who has shown improvement this season. Despite limited opportunities, Ford made the most of his chances, showing greater decisiveness and vision in moving across the field. He averaged 3.7 yards per carry despite an underwhelming performance from the offensive line.
Offensive Woes: Watson and the Passing Game
The offensive struggles, however, were glaring. This performance echoed the inconsistencies of Watson in 2022. Several factors contributed to the dismal showing: Amari Cooper dropped a potential touchdown on one of Watson’s rare accurate throws, the offensive line was dominated throughout the game and Watson himself seemed to lack confidence, often bailing from the pocket prematurely. While Watson deserves criticism, it’s worth noting the emotional toll of his father and close friend passing away this week. Although empathy is important, Browns fans can’t ignore that next week’s game against the Jaguars could be a turning point. If Watson fails to improve, questions about his future will only grow louder. However, a bounce-back performance could indicate that this was merely an off day.
Lingering Questions Beyond Watson’s Struggles
Larger issues loom for the Browns. The left tackle position remains a serious concern. Additionally, questions arise around Kevin Stefanski’s play-calling. Why are we seeing an offense that seems to deviate from his core philosophy? For a team that prides itself on its running game, 14 carries for the running backs is simply not enough. Looking Ahead The Browns now have the chance to change the narrative over the next two games. They can either turn the season around or risk watching it unravel.
