Coaching Philosophy
It’s no secret the Cleveland Cavaliers have impressed fans and critics alike with their winning streak to start the season. The Cavs remain the only team in the NBA to be unbeaten, proving that they may truly be unstoppable. Through the first ten games, they have already tied the franchise record of 130-point games in an entire season; it is currently five. The dominant start isn’t just about the fact that they’re winning, it’s how they’re winning. Coach Kenny Atkinson’s approach to the game prioritizing player development and a team-first mentality has the Cavs firing on all cylinders.
Atkinson’s focus on individual growth and skill enhancement makes this Cleveland team look noticeably different than last year. His coaching model has led to an increased confidence and aggression from the players that is unlike what we’ve witnessed in previous seasons. Atkinson emphasizes collective success over individual achievements and the Cavs rally behind his vision. He has helped the team to improve their decision-making and enhanced their defensive skills and awareness. The impact Atkinsons had on the players’ growth is why the Cavs have yet to take an L.
Outstanding Performances
What is the mystery behind the magic Atkinson has unearthed in the players? It is perhaps his past coaching experiences with the Brooklyn Nets and Golden State Warriors that translate into consistency for the Cavs. Having gotten the Nets to the playoffs and won the title with the Warriors, Atkinson at the helm couldn’t have been a hard sell, as the team looked to make a deeper impact this season.
We have seen the powers Donovan Mitchell possesses. Mitchell left viewers awe-struck with his 71-point performance during the 2022-23 season and amassed 40 or more points in six games last season. This year, it is his teammates who have stepped up and answered the call. Darius Garland has scored 20+ points in five of ten games to start. Evan Mobley is ranked fifth in blocks per game. Jarrett Allen has seven double-doubles, including four in a row to start the season. Isaac Okoro and Caris LeVert are both shooting over 50% from three-point range, respectively. The Cavs bench has also been productive averaging 41 points per game.
Improvements on Both Sides
The Cavs strive to execute on both ends of the floor and have done so successfully to start the season. Through 10 games, the Cavs have not had the same leading scorer for consecutive games. The team is currently top five in field goal percentage, three-pointers made, assists and steals. We have seen a perimeter-oriented offense and great player movement and ball distribution. The Cavs have created mismatches and exploited defensive weaknesses.
Defensively, they have held opponents to under 50% in field goals and three-pointers, and are ranked fifth in overall defense. Players are showcasing their ability to guard multiple positions and are playing help defense well. There is also a dynamic balance of rotating starters and bench players. Atkinson is strategic on all levels and though there are areas of opportunity, the Cavs have nowhere to go but up from here.
Watch as they seek their 12th win Monday against the 4-6 Chicago Bulls. In the words of basketball broadcaster Dick Vitale, it’s gonna be awesome baby, with a capital A!
