Another night in the season, another night the Cavs go wire-to-wire in a victory. Tonight, the Cleveland Cavaliers extended one franchise record and set a new club mark in the process. Despite missing their star shooting guard, Donovan Mitchell, Cleveland continued to show that they are the best complementary unit in the NBA.
After a thrilling win on Wednesday night, Cleveland hit the road for a quickie in the grindhouse of Memphis against the Grizzlies. This was the second time the teams met in three weeks. Cleveland won the first match-up 129-123 on Feb. 23.
The Grizzlies did make things interesting in the fourth quarter. Memphis opened the final stanza with a 9-2 outburst, which trimmed the lead to 114-101. However, Cleveland would immediately answer out of a timeout, going on an 8-2 run to re-grow the lead to 19. Memphis would cut the lead down to single digits within the final minute thanks to a 12-0 burst.
But in the end, Cleveland pulled away and walked away with a 133-124 victory. With the victory, the Cavs improved to a whopping 56-10. They also completed their 12th season sweep and now have a record of 18-3 against Western Conference opponents.
It’s becoming a staple under head coach Kenny Atkinson, for the Cavs go wire-to-wire in their wins. On another note, the Cavs are spreading the wealth. Seven players finished in double figures for scoring. Leading the charge was forward Evan Mobley, who finished with a double-double, 22 points and 11 rebounds.
Despite the win, the Grizzlies got a very impressive performance from star point guard Ja Morant, who led all scorers with a healthy 44-point stat line.
Also in the victory, Cleveland sets a new franchise record with 16 straight wins. The W also snaps the Grizzlies’ four-game winning streak. And a new franchise record is set tonight, with 11 straight road wins. The consistency is there for Cleveland. The question is, can they keep it going through the end of the season?
On deck for the next match-up is a Sunday national matinee against the Orlando Magic, with a tip-off set for 1 PM EDT. It will be an exciting finish for the season.
