A young man is about to walk into the door. The excitement is about to get serious. . 23-year-old pitcher Andrew Walters is coming to the show. The Cleveland Guardians called him after Alex Cobb got injured with a right-hand blister.
Could we be seeing a future elite starter for the Guardians?
It’s early to tell, but there’s a lot of buzz surrounding Walters. He’s the No. 22 prospect in the Guardians’ farm system. Walters had impressive minor-league performances. He’s a hard-throwing machine that can reach up to 100 miles per hour.
Walters came from a great program at the University of Miami with an excellent reputation for building future stars.
Walters has been doing his part with Akron. He dominated through 17 appearances, recording 38 strikeouts and posting a 1.35 ERA. By the end of May, he had already been promoted to Triple-A Columbus.
He played just 50 minor league games before being called to the Majors. It would’ve been interesting if he had gotten the call in August or July.
Why? If he had more starts with the Guardians and would be consistent, then there would’ve been a chance he could make the playoff roster. It would remind us of Jaret Wright in 1997 when he got to pitch in Game 7 of the 1997 World Series at the age of 21.
Walters’s story is a beautiful one and an unbelievable journey. His family will be there every step of the way.
Progressive Field could have lots of great memories going forward. Hopefully, Walters can fill the void that the Guardians need in the rotation.
