News and links to start the week.
Happy Monday, everyone. Let’s get into it as the Cavs offseason goes on.
The first sip
So, let’s talk about Mike Brown for a second.
Brown, the former two-time Cleveland Cavaliers head coach, is going to be the new head coach of the Sacramento Kings. In case you weren’t aware for whatever reason, Brown is currently an assistant on Steve Kerr’s staff with the Golden State Warriors.
His Cavs legacy is hard to parse. So much of his success in go-around number one was built on having LeBron James. When he came back, his first firing was called a mistake by Dan Gilbert only to be fired again after one season as LeBron James came back.
Still: He’s won lots of games as a head coach and has been with some very good Warriors teams and was with Gregg Popovich in San Antonio earlier in his career. He’s also been praised widely for his work with the Nigerian national team and helping that program hit new levels. (Isaac Okoro, for what it’s worth, has connected with Brown in that context.)
So will Brown succeed with the Kings? I have no idea. But I’m rooting for him. He’s been around and been through a lot via the meat grinder of an NBA career. He deserves a chance to get it right.
