“I can still remember that play. I was trying to make strides, trying to take steps in the right direction and trying to get better and then, boom, I literally get hit in my face and it’s back to d— near square one all over again,” Garland told cleveland.com in an exclusive interview during Cavs training camp at IMG Academy. “That’s what made it so tough last year. The momentum was picking up. Was getting better every day. We were getting better as a team. I felt like I was starting to learn so much and then … another bump in the road, another year of adversity. “I sort of lost my joy for basketball.”

#Cavs Darius Garland entered last season with lofty goals. But on Dec. 14, his night — and season — took an expected turn. What followed: five months of hell, which ultimately led to a rediscovery that has him poised for a bounce back.

#Cavs Darius Garland has put everything from last year behind him. The fractured jaw. The death of his grandmother. The trade rumors. The online hate. Now he’s determined to bounce back & silence the doubters after one of the hardest years of his life.

So, what is Garland trying to show this coming season? “That I’m better than last year,” Garland said. “First and foremost, I just want to stay healthy and get back to being myself, playing with that joy again and doing the things that I’m used to doing. Hopefully have an All-Star, All-NBA type of season and try to help this team win as many games as possible like I know I can. “I just want to stay healthy so I can get out there and shut so many people up that turned on me.” -via Cleveland Plain Dealer / October 16, 2024
Chris Fedor: #Cavs have just made a slight change to their plan tonight: Jarrett Allen WILL PLAY. He will be the only available starter. So, the guys who are sitting: Darius Garland, Donovan Mitchell, Max Strus (day-to-day with hip), Evan Mobley, Caris LeVert and Sam Merrill (sore wrist) -via Twitter @ChrisFedor / October 10, 2024
Garland said Atkinson has focused on different ways to get those shots. Garland needs to be more willing to walk into transition, pull-up 3s. There’s a plan to utilize him as a catch-and-shoot, off-ball player, flying off screens in the halfcourt. Atkinson has also pointed to the importance of corner 3s — an area where the Cavs ranked 13th in attempts, 16th in makes and 24th in percentage last season. -via Cleveland Plain Dealer / October 3, 2024
