With less than two weeks to go until the Cleveland Guardians open against the Kansas City Royals on March 27, let’s take a look at their last season, offseason transactions and spring training so far.
The Guardians ended last season with an impressive record of 92-69 landing them on top of the AL Central division. This was a significant improvement from the 2023 season when they finished third in the division with a 76-86 record.
Third baseman, Jose Ramirez ended last season with a team-leading 39 home runs with first baseman Josh Naylor not far behind with 31.
Last years batting average leaders were Steven Kwan (.292), Jose Ramirez (.279) and Andres Gimenez (.252).
Ramirez and Naylor also found themselves on top of the stat column in RBIs. Ramirez ended the 2024 season with 118 and Naylor compiled 108.
Ramírez is entering the third year of his seven-year $150 million contract.
Gimenez was sent to Toronto during the off-season in a trade that involved the Guardians, Blue Jays and Pirates.
Josh Naylor is also vying for a spot on a new team, the Arizona Diamondbacks. Naylor was traded to the D-Backs for pitcher Slade Cecconi.
On the bump, Ben Lively led the team with 13 wins followed by Tanner Bibee who collected 12.
So far this spring training, Cleveland is 9-12 with 13 games left to play.
This spring training’s offensive stat leaders include first baseman Kyle Manzardo with 14 hits and three home runs and Lane Thomas with 11 RBIs.
Some notable injuries for the Guardians that will continue in to the 2025 regular season are RHP Shane Bieber ( Right UCL Tear) who is expected to return in the middle of the season and LHP John Means (Left elbow UCL surgery recovery) who is expected to return late this season.
With only 13 games left to play until opening day, the Cleveland Guardians are looking to end spring training strong and carry momentum into the regular season.
