Mitchell has been named Player of the Week eight times in his career.
A member of the Cleveland Cavaliers was named Eastern Conference Player of the Week for the fourth time this season. This time, it was Donovan Mitchell. It’s the second time this season he received that honor. Darius Garland received the other two designations.
Mitchell averaged 22.8 points and 6 assists in the Cavs’ four wins this past week. This included an impressive 34-point and 6-assist performance against the Miami Heat.
This was the eighth time in Mitchell’s career that he’s been named Player of the Week and the fifth time since becoming a Cavalier. That puts him second in Cavaliers history in receiving this honor behind LeBron James, who was named Player of the Week 42 times during his time in Cleveland.
This week was a good example of how impactful Mitchell can be. He did a great job of providing the energy the Cavs needed. That doesn’t need to manifest itself in point total or shot attempts. It’s more so in his force and assertiveness on and off the ball. This was felt most at the start of games.
The Cavs followed his lead as they came out strong in each of their four wins this week. This was most demonstratively seen in their victory over the Dallas Mavericks where they scored 50 points in the first quarter. Mitchell had 9 points and 2 assists while being a plus 30 in that quarter.
Mitchell is averaging 23.7 points and 4.7 assists per game on .450/.398/.384 shooting splits this season.
