After 12 seasons at the age of 37, quarterback Colt McCoy has officially retired from the NFL. McCoy, a former Cleveland Browns draft pick never truly shined in this league as a leader.
Via Cle Dot Com: McCoy finished his 12-year NFL career throwing for 7,975 yards, 34 touchdowns and 32 interceptions while completing 62.6% of his pass attempts in 56 games, including 36 as a starter.
McCoy was drafted in the third round as the 85th overall selection by the Browns in the 2010 NFL draft. This after winning the ’10 national championship game just before for the Longhorns back in his true prime, it looked promising.
Sadly, he would then play three tumultuous seasons in Cleveland. A total of 24 games as a member of the Browns (in action) with not much to show for it here in The Land.
In 2013, the Browns traded McCoy and a 2013 sixth-round pick to the San Francisco 49ers in exchange for San Francisco’s fifth and seventh-round picks in the 2013 NFL Draft. Things just simply weren’t working out in Cleveland and the Browns had to move on as soon as possible.
There was one iconic play in 2011 where Steelers linebacker Jerome Harrison took a shot at McCoy trying to scramble away from pressure. This hit altered the season and frankly his career. The NFL would question its concussion protocol/rules after that one…
McCoy would go on to play with said 49ers, Redskins, Giants and Cardinals. Again, without much to show for it…
The former pass thrower announced that he is going to work on Big Ten football coverage with NBC Sports moving forward. I believe he’ll do an excellent job with that because of his stardom with Texas way back in the day during college.
Well, not to be rude but most everyone is saying “thanks for nothing” with this news in regards to his time with NFL Football. College is a different story, obviously. Did you know Colt’s actual first name is Daniel? Just found that out while doing research… You’d think it’d be like Colten or something.
In regards to the Browns organization, the team still hasn’t found that perfect quarterback to lead them to a Super Bowl. The list gets longer and longer after all of these years… McCoy is just one of many.
Ultimately, best of luck to you, Colt. Wish this could’ve turned out better for you as a pro, but let’s hope this next chapter is a good one with plenty of success.
