“The Cleveland Guardians Fantasy Camp family is heartbroken at the passing of its heart and soul, Bill Schubert,” said Bob DiBiasio, Cleveland Guardians SVP/Public Affairs. “One of the main reasons the participants of this program developed such a special bond was the spirit of Bill. His was a life filled with love, adventure, and true friendships. You were lucky if you were his friend. He will be missed. Our deepest sympathies to the entire Schubert family.”
A Cleveland native, growing up on the East Side of Cleveland, Bill excelled in all sports. But his passion was Cleveland Guardians Fantasy Camp! And anyone associated with Guards Fantasy Camp in the past 18 years—whether former Guardians professionals or guest competitors—knew Bill Schubert, who proudly wore #8.
“In 2007, he attended Cleveland Guardians Fantasy Camp with his brothers (Chris and Dave) for the first time. In Fantasy Camp, Bill found camaraderie, friendly competition, and deep and lasting brotherhood. Bill’s enthusiasm and ability to bring people together enhanced the experience for all who attended. He was rightfully awarded ‘Mr. Fantasy Camp’ in 2015, and he won three championships in 2012, 2016, and 2024.” ~ Obituary
He was the consummate teammate—always positive and uplifting, always smiling, and always having fun. Bill truly made the entire experience more enjoyable.
As difficult as it is to imagine a Fantasy Camp without Bill Schubert, Fantasy Campers will be spared that anxiety. As access to the facilities in Goodyear, Arizona, became more difficult, the Guardians came to the painful decision to end Fantasy Camp. Last year’s camp was the final one.
Fittingly, Bill, who spent the last six years battling cancer, took the mound at that final Fantasy Camp in 2024, pitching with medical equipment strapped to his body. He recently passed away. Life’s final battle over #8 has gone on to greatness.
He is being laid to rest this Thursday in the City of Cleveland. He was the beloved husband of 28 years to Dallas Wood, dearest father of Emma, Lila, and Sara Mae.
