Seems like we just talked about Jarrett Allen and the Cavs coming to terms on a three year extension to stay in Cleveland for the next five season. Well according to Bleacher Report, Allen and the Cavs had discussions and Allen was, “obligated” to sign this extension by August 6th. The reasoning: The Cavs needed Allen to sign by this date in order to be able to trade Allen by the trade deadline of the upcoming season. Allen is now eligible to be traded on or after February 2nd, 2025, just weeks prior to the deadline in the NBA.
So what would a trade look like for the Cavs and Jarrett Allen? Up until this playoffs last season, Allen was considered a cornerstone of the franchise. He was the first to sign an extension when he signed a five-year, $100 Million contract after his trade from Brooklyn to the Cavs. Now three years later and with a questionable reputation on how much he wants to play, the Cavs need to look elsewhere.
There were several potential trade scenarios at the deadline last season involving Allen. While none of them came to fruition then, there maybe some that work between now and February 2nd. Exploring what these trades could look like, purely from a financial and needs-based, thanks to spotrac.com, the following trades could be ideal for the Cavs.
The most appealing and based on a midseason trade proposal, the Cavs ship Allen and forward Georges Niang to Brooklyn for forward Cam Johnson and point guard Dennis Schroder. Purely based on money, this trade works for both teams, but it gives the Cavaliers the ability to get that small forward that can stretch the floor and outside shooting consistently from that position. Schroder would give them a true backup point guard and not force Mitchell to have to handle the ball as much as he did last season.
Another trade proposal from last season’s deadline, updated includes Allen and Niang going to Miami for Tyler Herro and Nikola Jovic. The primary aspect of this trade is clearly Herro. A 20 PPG scorer last season with the Heat, would be an ideal small forward for the Cavs providing the same scoring and shooting ability that Johnson has, just with playoff experience. A lot of Cavs fans that I have talked to have talked in length about how much they would like either Cam Johnson or Tyler Herro on this team and how much they’d help us spread the floor.
One trade option that is not as glamorous because it doesn’t involve the type of shooter that Herro or Johnson are would involve the Houston. Allen to the Rockets for center Steven Adams and Cam Whitmore. Adams is a physical, defensive presence down low that would be essential when facing teams like the Knicks, Celtics, and Magic in the playoffs. He has playoff experience and would be perfect for a team that has their primary scorers identified. Getting Whitmore maybe a stretch but would provide the type of player the Cavs hoped Jae Crowder would have been when they acquired him from Boston in the Kyrie Irving trade. Long and athletic, he would be a good small or power forward off the bench.
All in all, it’s early in this process of determining what the Cavs will do with Allen. Right now, all we can do is wait and see whether he will be a part of this team or not. Rumors were flying around following the playoff exit that his teammates were not happy with his lack of desire to play against Boston. Then head coach J.B. Bickerstaff came out and defended Allen in the post-season exit press conference, but for us fans, all we can do is sit and wonder would could have been and would could be.
