The candidacy of Kenny Atkinson for head coach of the Cleveland Cavaliers is “gaining steam,” reports Marc Stein.
James Borrego had emerged as the favorite for the job, but Atkinson is also being strongly considered. Atkinson was fired by the Brooklyn Nets as head coach in 2020 and has since worked as an assistant coach under Steve Kerr with the Golden State Warriors. In 2022, Atkinson agreed to become head coach of the Charlotte Hornets but decided not to ultimately take the job.
Micah Nori is also in contention for the job.
The Cavaliers parted ways with J.B. Bickerstaff soon after they were eliminated in the second round of the playoffs by the Boston Celtics.
