Mathew Boyd, who has been fighting to return to the pitch with every ounce of his being, is back on our screen with nothing short of an impressive return. Pitching an inning of 5.1, Mathew Boyd reassures fans to believe in him despite being out for a long period. He was on the pitch again after a year and almost two months due to injury, with an outstanding debut for the Guardians despite being sidelined as soon as he was signed. Back on the pitch after being out for so long, the left handler showed an electrifying performance with an impressive welcome from the Guardians.
Mathew Boyd’s Journey
Mathew is known for his style of pitching. He has made some impressive moves since he started his professional career, from being drafted by the Toronto Blue Jays and playing for the Blues’ Minor League to playing in the Major League after showing great development. In the Major League for Toronto Blue Jays, Boyd was again traded to the Detroit Tigers, where he became a major starter and earned his style of play, leading the Tigers in starts, innings and strikeouts.
However, due to his major role on the Tigers, the veteran pitcher was setback by a major injury in 2021, which will set the course for the rest of his career. Injuries have caused havoc and ruined great talents in baseball, but for Mathew, it’s just a setback in his career. Suffering from a flexor injury on his arm, he was taken out of the team for recovery, after which he attempted to make another appearance. Making just one start after his return, Boyd was cleared for surgery. He signed a new contract with the San Francisco Giants even when out of play, after which the Giants traded him to the Seattle Marines, where he returned to pitching late in the 2022 season.
Come the 2023 season, Boyd returned to Detroit Tiger on a one-year deal from the Marines, where he struggled at the start, finding it hard to gain his form and consistency, making 15 starts with a 5.45 ERA. Despite not being in his best form, the left handler suffered another injury, a much more career-threatening one, an elbow injury that required Tommy John Surgery and about 12-18 months of recovery after surgery. After undergoing successful surgery and about 14 months of recovery, the pitcher signed a new one-year deal with the Cleveland Guardians and returned to the pitch with an impressive debut.
The Guardians Guard
After an impressive start, Mathew Boyd felt at home with the guardians playing fastballs and sliders, striking out six batters while allowing just one run and three hits over 5.1 innings. He threw 80 pitches, with 61 strikes (76.3% strike rate), generating a 29% whiff rate on fastballs and 33% on sliders. This impressive performance was a major milestone achieved by the pitcher since his return to professional play; with more expectancy from the pitcher for his wealth of experience and pitching style of play, the guardians hope to return him to his best form. Mathew Boyd could secure himself as a key starter if he continues to play impressively and consistently with effective pitches.
