Mitchell and Mobley took home two of this month’s awards.
Cleveland Cavaliers All-Star Donovan Mitchell has been named the NBA’s Eastern Conference Player of the Month. This is Mitchell’s third time winning Player of the Month and second since joining Cleveland.
The Cavaliers went 10-1 in February as Mitchell averaged 25.8 points and 5.3 assists in just 30.5 minutes. He was efficient as ever, shooting 38.1% on 8.4 three-point attempts per game and nearly 50% from the floor overall. Mitchell ended the month with a 41-point explosion to knock off the Boston Celtics — closing February with a strong case for the award.
Mitchell hasn’t dominated the spotlight in Cleveland like in years previous. Everything from Evan Mobley’s ascension to potential All-NBA status, Darius Garland’s return to All-Star form and Ty Jerome’s emergence as a Sixth Man of the Year candidate has buried Mitchell, at times. Garland has notched multiple Player of the Week awards this season while Mobley has won two of the last three Defensive Player of the Month titles. Mobley won December and February’s defensive awards — and is emerging as the favorite to win the big one at the end of the season.
But make no mistake, Mitchell is having a special season as the leading scorer of a 50-11 team. His recent performance against Boston was a reminder of how Mitchell has elevated this team to new heights since his arrival. Mobley and Garland might be keys to long-term success but Mitchell’s superstar capabilities have put them in a position for immediate success.
On the West Coast, LeBron James takes home Player of the Month for the Los Angeles Lakers. His longevity speaks for itself — with the King set to score his 50,000 career points on Tuesday night. We won’t see another player like James maybe… ever. So don’t take this for granted. James averaged 29.3 points, 10.5 rebounds and 6.9 assists in February.
