Mitchell named Player of the Week

Mitchell’s 25.3 points per game helped lead the Cavs to a 4-0 record this week.

Cleveland Cavaliers superstar Donovan Mitchell was named Eastern Conference Player of the Week. This was the seventh time in his career he’s received that honor, including his time in the Western Conference. In leading the Cavs to a 4-0 record last week, Mitchell scored at least 20 points in all of those contests and drilled a game-winning jumper against the Milwaukee Bucks, his first game-winner of his career.

Mitchell has won the award as a member of the Cavs on three other occasions, tied for second-most in franchise history. He has a long way to go in catching number one on that list: LeBron James’ 42 honors.

Mitchell averaged 25.3 points on 51% shooting last week, including a blazing 42% from beyond the arc. The former Louisville product chipped in 2.8 rebounds and 4.3 assists in those games as well, all in 30 minutes per game. Perhaps underrated is that Mitchell is currently averaging six fewer minutes per game, yet putting up similar numbers with greater efficiency.

The Cavs are undefeated because of team efforts across the board, but there is no denying that Mitchell is the engine that keeps the league’s second-best offense humming along. Perhaps even more impressive than the Player of the Week award is that the Cavs held a perfect record all against teams that made the playoffs last season.

For the Western Conference, Phoenix Suns star and fellow shooting guard Devin Booker took home the Player of the Week honors.
