Wednesday night’s 9-1 loss to the Baltimore Orioles was certainly a disappointing one for the Cleveland Guardians. The team has a chance to make up for it tonight with another matchup in this Baltimore series.
The worst part of the game was a grand slam given up to second baseman Jackson Holliday in the 2nd inning by the starting pitcher Gavin Williams (walk, single, walk, in that inning got them loaded). Even so, the good part about his start was that Williams was able to go 6.2 innings total and only gave up five runs. It was a solo shot by Ramon Laureano to make the score 5-1 in the 7th.
Sure, the bullpen gave up four more runs to make the final score 9-1 and that remains another discussion for another time. However, what was so impressive was the composure Williams maintained even after giving up a devastating blast, such as a grand slam, so early in the game.
Honestly, I could see a lot of starting pitchers giving up that many runs that early just simply giving up and blowing the game wide open. It was quite the opposite for the next almost seven innings until the solo homer ended the start for Williams.
Williams gave the team a chance, the 9-1 final score obviously shows they didn’t take advantage of it at all. But just seeing that ability to overcome adversity was really good to see and leaves us with a positive outlook for the rest of the season.
Williams finished with four hits allowed, four walks and five strikeouts. He is now 1-1 on the year with a 4.58 ERA. Let’s see how he does in his next start and hopefully doesn’t give up any more grand slams! The Guardians currently sit at 9-8 on this young season.
