The Browns won Sunday 29-24 over the Baltimore Ravens in Cleveland and it was certainly an inspirational win for many reasons. The obvious which I elaborated on in a previous article is because of the divine intervention with the passing of Jim Donovan (link shared below). However, there is something else.
It’s quarterback Jameis Winston.
Us Browns fans have been stuck with Deshaun Watson for three seasons and we all know it hasn’t been pretty. A 9-10 record overall as the starting quarterback. But, it’s more than just the stats.
Watson not only was a horrible person due to all of the alleged allegations against him, but he just simply carried a way about him that came across as…apathetic. Didn’t care, was all about the money and everything else in his life. All of those “activities” we’ll call them.
Is Winston going to carry the Browns to the Super Bowl?
Uhhh…no.
At least, not this year that’s for sure.
I hesitate to get too excited after this single win over the Ravens because it’ll just disappoint me the rest of the season. But with Jameis, everything is different. There’s a belief and it’s clear the team feels it.
From the interviews to the pregame pump-up speeches to actually winning a game the man has the team thinking that everything can change here in Cleveland. Winston threw for 334 yards and three touchdowns in the win.
Of course, anyone who was watching on Sunday knows the Browns got very lucky in a number of ways specifically with both Ravens receivers and defensive backs dropping balls even my late-grandma would’ve caught when I used to play catch with her. Actually, take that back! She was better than an NFL receiver – HAHA.
Those plays are made by Baltimore and Browns fans are bashing this team in the same way as every week with another loss.
But, the saying goes “A win is a win.”
Jameis needs to carry that fire for the rest of this season and the reason isn’t simply wins and losses. It’s the culture that needs to completely shift throughout the rest of the organization as it looks to shift in to a new era of football.
Look, the Browns are 2-6 and in last place in the AFC North.
It ain’t happening overnight.
However, in order to begin to change the culture for years to come it begins at the quarterback position and a belief in the starter as an inspiration. Instead of being those, “Same old Browns.” Maybe with Watson gone and Winston starting everything will be different here in Cleveland.
The Browns host a very solid Chargers team in Cleveland before the bye week on Sunday. We’ll see if Winston is able to inspire the team in even more ways and dare I say win back-to-back games.
