Ok, as a football fan, player and coach, I feel this debate is often overlooked. This is the hardest position on the field to play and as a former defensive player, I have to give my take on my top five all-time. You may disagree but here are mine so here we go!
5) Rod Woodson

Yes he spent most of his career as a Steeler, but everywhere he went he had an immediate impact on the field. He even came back from tearing his ACL to play in the Super Bowl the same year. Rod is one of the goats.
4) Mel Blount

Before you even ask, any man that’s 6’3, rocks a cowboy hat, and then proceeds to beat up wide receivers to the point that they change the rules and name it after you is a testament to the impact he had on the game. This man was a threat to offenses and receivers during his time in the NFL.
3) Charles Woodson

Before Colorado’s Travis Hunter won the Heisman Trophy Chuck was the first to do it. As being the First person to win the award as a defensive player shows his ability to lock up any player who lined up in front of him. Did I mention he could hit too?
2) Darrelle Revis

Come on, the man had his own Island( Revis Island for those that don’t know). Not only did he have his own island, but he locked up some of the best receivers of all time such as Randy Moss, Chad Johnson, and Megatron just to name a few. The career he had put him in the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2023.
1) Deion Sanders

He may be “Coach Prime” now, but in his heyday, he was “PRIME TIME”!! The lights were never too bright, the stage was never too big, and he was always ready. This is the only player we’ve seen in a long time to completely take away a entire side of a field. So much So that in Super Bowl 30, he Locked up an entire side of the field which gave his teammate and fellow Cornerback Larry Brown two interceptions and Super Bowl MVP. Who else can say they have that kind of Impact?
You may disagree, you may agree, but I personally can’t think of any of the five men I just listed being outshined by anyone else but themselves.
