New Orleans Pelicans forward Javonte Green has agreed to a contract buyout and intends to sign with the Cleveland Cavaliers upon clearing waivers. The deal provides additional wing depth for the Eastern Conference-best Cavaliers, and it comes after they landed forward De’Andre Hunter from the Atlanta Hawks in a trade for Caris LeVert, Georges Niang, future second-round picks and pick swaps at the deadline.
Green would provide Cleveland with another wing option against the Celtics’ duo of superstar wings, Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown. This is what makes this deal so awesome. Green is a big wing that can play ferocious defense. With Hunter and Green, Cavs coach Kenny Atkinson has the chess pieces to make life miserable for Boston’s Big Two stars. Playing a 40 Minutes of Hell type defense just became possible. The best way to describe this pickup is playing chess with a extra rook.
The Cavaliers are showing their fans(especially their players)that they are serious about winning a championship. The Cavs lack nothing now. For every move playoff opponents make, we have a countermove. Kenny Atkinson must be smirking. Cleveland’s only perceived weakness is having enough shooting. Green can hit open shots if he’s in with the starters. He’s good enough to consistently score against second teamers.
The buyout comes after Green played a season-high 34 minutes for the Pelicans in their final game before the All-Star break. Green started in place of a resting Zion Williamson and had 9 points, 7 rebounds, 5 steals and 2 assists in an overtime win over the Sacramento Kings.Green joined the Pelicans as a free agent in August and has averaged 5.8 points, 3.6 rebounds and 1.1 steals. He is ranked second on the team in both total blocks and steals. The Cavaliers will be the fourth team for Green in his sixth NBA season. He is averaging 5.5 points and 3.2 rebounds in his career.
In conclusion , this is the type move championship organizations make. The Cavaliers aren’t getting a super season followed by a first round exit. We have the talent. We have our players. We have our coach. No more excuses. Championship or bust.
