Given the train wreak of a football season in Cleveland, it’s a fact the Browns problem’s are to big to be solved in free agency. Cleveland is going to have to hit in the draft. What are the available options at the second overall pick??? What direction does Cleveland want to go??? What about Day 2 and Day 3 picks????
Lets start with the first pick. Tennessee wants to trade it. The Titians aren’t in love with any of the quarterbacks. Tennessee has way more roster holes then draft picks. So preassumably the Titians want a trade.
Theres two generational talents that will be available. At least one of these will be there when the Browns pick.Penn State defensive end Abdul Carter could be the replacement for Myles Garrett. If we can convince Garrett to stay, matching him with Carter would give the Browns pass rush some serious firepower. This could bring back the days of scary defenses intimidating any team in a way we haven’t seen since the heyday of Marty Schottenheimer.
The other is Superman Travis Hunter. Hunters NFL future will probably be at cornerback. You get a shutdown corner that you have a package of plays for at wide receiver. Cleveland could fill two needs with one premium pick. Hunter is a difference maker. He will be a star in the NFL. Hunter would look good in a Browns uniform.
Conventional wisdom says any Top 5 pick should be a quarterback. The question is are there any franchise quarterbacks in this draft???? There will be two good ones in Cam Ward and Sheduer Sanders. Are they great??? Is it worth spending a Top 5 pick to find out???
Sanders has elite pocket presence and a rocket arm. The knock on Sheduer is he’s still growing up and needs to refine leadership skills. He’s going to have to keep up the work ethic too. We don’t need another Johnny Manizel. The other red flag is Sander’s father, Deion. Will Deion be a public relations nightmare for Cleveland??? We don’t need more of those either.
Cam Ward has mobility and arm talent. Ward has the highest upside of this quarterback draft class. He needs to understand what a riskreward ratio is. The chances Ward took in college will get you knocked into the middle of next week in the NFL. Remember RGlll and how his career went??? We don’t need a repeat.
Its a given DeShawn Watson needs to go away. Hes been a bust. If Cleveland can’t trade him, let him ride the bench. Please for the love of Saint Peter, do not let Watson ruin anymore football in Cleveland.
What about a trade???? It seems unlikely but still possible. The Titians would love to deal the number one pick. That will lower our price. If we don’t get a king’s ransom, it’s probably not worth a deal. And who will fall in love with one of the quarterbacks enough to trade up for one??? Probably not anyone.
Cleveland has options at number two. They will in all likelihood keep it and take which one of Carter and Hunter that Tennessee doesn’t take. If the Titians trade to a quarterback desperate team, that will definitely make a tough choice for the Browns.
For our Day Two picks, we need to bolster our lines. This season exposed a disturbing lack of depth on our o-line. Its the NFL. Injuries happen. We need to be ready for this. A swing tackle and a decent guard to develop need to be on the priority list. You never have enough pass rushers. Getting a quality prospect or two here would be great. The Browns can paper over roster holes here. Travis Kelce was a 3 round pick. We need Kelce type players to develop here.
Day 3 is where we need quality players. Pick the best player available and develop them. Look at how the Chiefs and Eagles develop starters from Day 3 picks. Thats why those two teams are in the Super Bowl. Its a big reason the Browns aren’t. Even getting depth pieces here is a win. Lets identify our arthrotypes and get those players. A good back up running back would be nice. The combination of Nick Chubb and Kaream Hunt was a great way to close out games. We can do something similar with a decent back here.
The Browns are in good position to ace the draft. I know where have i heard this story before??? If they don’t trade the second overall pick, they can trade back in later rounds for more draft capitol. Andrew Berry’s ability to create draft magic comes in to play here. Berry needs to cook.
In conclusion Cleveland has lots of options but no overwhelming good ones. How we can get our kind of talent will be the story of the draft. We need talent. Lets go get some.
