There are lots of iffy calls these days on whether a college football player violated the “unsportsmanlike conduct” policy. But one rule that has been on the books for what feels like eternity is that you cannot spit on an opponent. Unfortunately, one player in the Oregon-Ohio State game let his emotions get the better of him.
Early in the second quarter, after getting the ball back on a surprise onsides kick, the Ducks were driving in the Ohio State redzone. But after an incomplete pass to wide receiver Traeshon Holden, Holden made the absolutely insane decision to spit at Buckeyes cornerback Davison Igbinosun.
Holden was caught red-handed by the referees and promptly ejected from the game.
Football fans who saw the act were in utter disbelief:
“Traeshon Holden just did one of the absolute dumbest things I’ve seen anyone do on a football field,” one user remarked on X.
“Oregon WR Traeshon Holden has been ejected from the game for ‘spitting on an opponent.’ Wow,” Ross Dellenger wrote.
“Suspend Traeshon Holden for the rest of the year. What a nasty (expletive) loser,” a third declared.
Some have pointed out that Holden spitting on an opponent could drive down his NFL draft stock as well. About half of the NFL have sent scouts to Eugene, Oregon for this game.
“Traeshon Holden was putting together a really nice season and probably will the rest of the year too. He will now have to answer questions about spitting on a player in this game during his draft interviews. Stupid,” a fourth remarked.
It was simply a dumb decision – and one that could wind up punishing the Ducks simply as a consequence of him missing the rest of the game. There’s a chance he could miss more games as well for disciplinary reasons.
What on earth would drive him to do such a thing?
