For the second straight summer, Ohio State enters training camp without a clear starting quarterback.
Kansas State transfer Will Howard joins a crowded room also featuring Devin Brown and Lincoln Kienholz. Top recruits Julian Sayin and Air Noland could battle to earn reps sooner than anticipated.
On Tuesday, Buckeyes offensive coordinator Chip Kelly discussed their quarterback situation. When a reporter asked if the team would name a starter soon, Kelly didn’t provide an ETA or offer any insight into whether someone is leading the competition.
“That’s a great question by you, and I know exactly where you’re going with that,” Kelly said. “I don’t have an answer for you.”
He laughed at another reporter asking who the team’s second quarterback is. In this case, that information might not be a dead giveaway to the QB1.
Ohio State has given numerous quarterbacks first-team looks as the staff evaluates all options.
“The lineup changes every day, who’s in with what group,” Kelly said. “Just kind of mixing and matching right now, but we’re all trying to make the most of our reps.”
Last week, head coach Ryan Day told reporters he’d prefer to have a starter assert himself early in camp. However, he won’t press the issue.
“It has to happen, but you can’t force it,” Day said. “Ideally, we’d like to have someone as a starter and go into the season and get going with that.”
