Ohio State returns to the field this Saturday to host Nebraska after a bye week. In the Buckeyes’ last game, they lost 32-31 on the road to Oregon.
Ohio State’s final play in the loss to the Ducks was a scramble by quarterback Will Howard on 3rd-and-20 from the Oregon 38-yard line. Howard picked up 12 yards, but slid down as time expired before Ohio State could use its final timeout to set up a game-winning field goal attempt. At least, that’s what officials ruled.
On Tuesday, OSU head coach Ryan Day revealed that the Buckeyes sent video of the final play to the Big Ten in order to plead their case that they called timeout with one second still on the clock.
Ultimately, the Big Ten shut down the appeal, saying there was no time left and the officials got it right.
Not surprisingly, some college football fans are taking Day to task for his complaint.
“Karen Day back at it,” one person wrote.
“Game was 2 weeks ago. If he wants to continue to speak about it, to each their own,” an Oregon fan added.
“Telling players to just ‘control what you can control’ and ‘focus on what’s in front of you’ then doing this…why bother?” an Ohio State fan asked. “For 6 years it’s been ‘we gotta get it fixed’ but then time is wasted whining to the B10.”
“Dude is the softest coach in the country and it’s not particularly close. Move on your kicker would have shanked it anyways,” another commenter wrote.
“SAWFT,” chimed in a Michigan fan.
With the Big Ten officially telling them they were wrong, Ohio State has to put the Oregon loss completely behind them.
The Buckeyes are still ranked fourth in the country, but likely need to win their final six games in order to make the College Football Playoff.
That stretch includes matchups with No. 3 Penn State, No. 13 Indiana and arch-rival Michigan.
