For the second week in a row a college football field was littered with trash following a controversial call.
Last weekend Texas Longhorns fans lobbed objects onto the field after a controversial play in the team’s loss to the Georgia Bulldogs. That play was eventually called in the favor of the Longhorns, which may have emboldened Ohio State fans to do the same thing this afternoon.
During the final few minutes of action against the Nebraska Cornhuskers, officials called targeting on Ohio State’s Arvell Reese.
Nebraska quarterback Dylan Raiola completed a pass to Jahmal Banks, who was hit hard by Reese. The ball popped free, but officials ruled that targeting took place.
After a lengthy review, officials confirmed targeting on the play and ejected Reese from the contest. An incensed Ryan Day protested the call and initially received a sideline warning that was later rescinded.
Video showed his reaction followed by Buckeyes fans launching trash onto the field in protest over the call.
In the end, the controversial call didn’t end up impacting the game all that much. Just a few plays later, Raiola threw a game-ending interception which allowed Ohio State to run out the clock.
However, that probably won’t calm the minds of Ohio State fans who watched the officials completely botch the play.
Next up for Ohio State is a highly-anticipated matchup against the Penn State Nittany Lions.
