The Ohio State Buckeyes football team routed Western Kentucky 63-10 on Saturday afternoon in the Horseshoe.
The Buckeyes took a 42-10 halftime lead on 3 rushing touchdowns and 3 through the air.
In the second half the Buckeyes had one offensive touchdown through the air and two defensive touchdowns.
In post game comments, Ohio State Head Coach Ryan Day expressed that he was happy about how the Buckeyes performed against Western Kentucky.
“What we wanted to do in this game, and we knew it wasn’t going to be perfect, was play really, really hard, really super competitive, (with) a lot of energy, a lot of passion, (and) a lot of people running around,” said Day.“We got that done. But that’s the way we’re going to have to play moving forward.”
Buckeyes Score Six Touchdowns in First Half
As Day mentioned, the Buckeyes played with a lot of energy and passion right away leading to scoring six first half touchdowns.
Ohio State got the first of their six first half touchdowns with 11:32 remaining in the first quarter when TreVeyon Henderson scored on a 21-yard touchdown run to take a 7-0 lead.
Western Kentucky then kicked a field goal to make the score 7-3 with 1:07 remaining in the first quarter.
After only a seven point first quarter, the Buckeyes offense exploded for five touchdowns in the second quarter.
Ohio State got their first touchdown of the second quarter on a touchdown run from TreVeyon Henderson to take a 14-3 lead with 10:53 remaining in the first half.
Western Kentucky scored a touchdown in the second quarter when Austin Reed connected with Malachi Corley for a two yard touchdown pass with 8:10 left to make the score 14-10.
However, after that point, the Buckeyes would score 49 unanswered points to make the final score 63-10.
The Buckeyes scored again when Kyle McCord connected with Marvin Harrison for a 75-yard Touchdown pass with 8 minutes to go in the first half to make the score 21-10.
For the game, Harrison had 5 catches for 126 yards and a touchdown.
After Harrison’s touchdown, the Buckeyes scored three more touchdowns in the first half to go into halftime leading 42-10.
Chip Trayanum, who played high school football at Akron Hoban, had a 40-yard Touchdown run with 4:13 left in the first half.
Then in the last two minutes of the first half, Emeka Egbuka caught two touchdowns passes from McCord.
For the game, Egbuka caught 4 passes for 57 yards.
Buckeyes Add Three Second Half Touchdowns
In the second half the Buckeyes scored three more touchdowns to make the final score 63-10.
The Buckeyes scored with 4:38 left in the third quarter when Tyleik Williams recovered a fumble in the end zone to put the Buckeyes ahead 49-10.
Then, the Buckeyes scored two more touchdowns in the fourth quarter.
They scored on a 28-yard touchdown pass from Devin Brown to Carnell Tate with 12:37 left to go in the game.
The Buckeyes then scored their final touchdown when Jermaine Matthews had a 58-yard pick six to make the final score 63-10.
For the game, on the ground, the Buckeyes were led by TreVeyon Henderson who had 88 yards on 13 carries and scored two touchdowns.
Ohio State was led through the air by quarterback Kyle McCord who was 19-23, for 318 yards and 3 touchdowns.
Overall, McCord was happy with the way the Buckeyes offense performed.
“I think this was probably our most complete game as an offense,” said McCord. “Just trying to continue to take strides. I feel like we ran the ball really well, we had success passing and so it’s definitely a good confidence boost going into obviously a big test next week.”
The Buckeyes will travel to South Bend, Indiana to take on the University of Notre Dame next Saturday, September 23rd in a prime time 7:30pm matchup.
