Fresh off winning the national championship, Ohio State is already preparing for next season.
Among other things, that means the Buckeyes get a handle on their roster attrition, so they know what positions they may need to target in the transfer portal. Already, some Ohio State players have entered the portal, intent on exploring opportunities elsewhere. One portal entrant was defensive lineman Hero Kanu.
Kanu, who appeared in all 15 games this season in a reserve role, announced last week his intention to transfer, thanking the program for the time he spent as a Buckeye.
“I got nothing but love for The Ohio State, The Coaches and brothers. Thank you guys for everything!” Kanu tweeted.
On Wednesday morning, Kanu announced his next destination. He’s heading to the University of Texas.
Kanu, who hails from Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif., was the 118th-ranked prospect in the 2022 recruiting cycle, according to 247Sports’ Composite Rankings.
The 6-foot-5, 305-pound interior lineman visited Texas, Florida and Georgia before deciding on the Longhorns.
“Man, it was cool. It was only a limited time so it was only like a conversation,” Kanu told 247Sports about his trip to Austin. “I had a good conversation with Coach Sark. Just having a conversation about the future.”
After appearing in three games while redshirting in 2022, Kanu saw his role increase in 2023. He played in 12 games, making 10 tackles and recording his first career sack.
In 2024, Kanu had four tackles while playing in all 15 games for the Buckeyes. He had one tackle each in Ohio State’s College Football Playoff wins over Oregon and Texas.

With Texas, Kanu will have the chance to immediately compete against his former team.
Ohio State will host the Longhorns in the 2025 regular season opener on Aug. 30 in a rematch of their College Football Playoff semifinal clash.
That game should be one of the top matchups of the entire 2025 college football season.
