Ohio State’s Jeremiah Smith is already placing himself amongst the nation’s top receivers as true freshman and former Alabama QB Greg McElroy says he sees a lot of his former teammate in the Buckeyes star.
On Wednesday’s episode of “Always College Football,” the ESPN commentator likened Smith to NFL great Julio Jones — who also came into the sport with a lot of hype.
“This guy comes in with all sorts of fanfare,” McElroy explained. “He reminds me very much of a guy like Julio Jones. Just big, physical, looks the part. He looks like he’s 28 years old when he’s just 18 or 19. But he’s not really at this point, giving up any physical limitations to anyone he’s played against.”
Smith is coming off a show-stopping performance against the Michigan State Spartans where he made two jaw-dropping one-handed catches and made easy work of MSU’s secondary.
This week presents a different challenge, however, as Ohio State hosts the typically strong Iowa.
“We’re going to find out more about this young man,” McElroy said. “But he’s off to a great start here in his first few weeks as a Buckeye.”
Smith is the Buckeyes’ leading receiver with 19 catches for 364 yards and five touchdowns.
He’ll look to improve on those stats even further with a strong performance against another Big Ten opponent.
